Work in Progress

Random blog on my life as a Graphic/Web Designer, Web Developer, Salsa Dancer, and Christian living in Vancouver, Canada. That and what I find on the internet, because you know, I have nothing better to do.

Steven Demaio Harvard Business Articles Are Great!

Is Freelancing Right For You?

Definitely a question that I have been asking myself for a while. I recently came off from working with a company because of the economy. They felt that they couldn’t afford working on new projects at the moment, and so I was let go.

I have been working through this understanding of being a freelancer. It requires quite a commitment, a discipline that I have been instilling in myself, and set a values that I have to uphold.

My work has been okay so far, but it leaves me wanting more and defining what I am worth in the market. The funny thing is that some companies know what I am worth to them, but may not be able to afford it. This is something that I have been struggling with for a while now, work for a company or continue freelancing?

Steven Demaio does a great job of writing these articles for freelancing. I think I find them meaty enough to get something good out of them, but not too much to gorge myself with.

Vancouver City Centre Station to Yaletown Roundhouse Station. My first test ride of the new #canadaline was reminiscent of Romania’s underground train in Bucharest. The new canada line boasts bigger trains, an LED display which tells you how long the wait is until the next train (finally!) and overall it just looks cooler. I love being able to travel from Waterfront Station to Yaletown in just a few minutes. Which, conveniently, I am at this Starbucks (across from the Yaletown Station), that has this feel of the first Starbucks in Seattle (brick wall and all).

The Canada Line has my to thumbs up. Now, we just have to wait and see how it holds up the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Vancouver is starting to become quite the scene for Salsa lately. In the past couple of weeks alone, there has been people from Toronto, New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Spain (not sure of the city), Los Angeles, and avid dancers coming from Calgary, Seattle, Nanaimo and Victoria.
In the past events that we have had, there have been people from Portland, Montreal, New Jersey, Paris, London, DC and Milan.
Just recently, Albert Torres himself (without us asking him), mentioned the Vancouver International Salsafestival happening in March at the Laval Salsa Congress in Quebec this past weekend.
People from around the world have been emailing us to come to this event and our vancouver salsafestival facebook group has grown to 673 members.
Mad About Mambo’s dream of making Vancouver a hot spot for international dancers is starting to come true. Excited? I am :)
Now all we need to do is have another 5 hour meeting to discuss how we can make this event even better.
